Island Chateau Enjoys A Garden Backdrop In Montreal

By its very nature, an island setting near a major metropolis brings with it a certain quality of life. A feeling of unity is created when neighborhood borders don’t bleed into one another but are clearly defined by waterways. Island residents can have a strong sense of identity, community and security.

L’Île-Bizard is part of L’Île-Bizard/Sainte-Geneviève borough of Montreal, Quebec. A site of early farming, the peaceful isle is the largest separate island in the area outside of Montreal itself.

Much greenspace remains today. The relaxed garden location is home to multiple golf courses, sports complexes and a 200-hectare (500-acre) nature park.

Custom made by a builder for his own family, this European-style chateau at 6 Rue Bélair has been completely refurbished and is awaiting its next islander. Set near the water amid mature trees, the turnkey house has a castle-like appearance with its turret, stone walls and steep multigabled sloped roof. An arch-topped 10-foot double front door opens to the foyer.

Inside, high ceilings carry throughout the more than 4,200 square feet of living space. Wall moldings add visual interest. Tall windows and glass doors bring in natural light.

A wide passage with a wine wall connects the formal living/reception room with the dining room, which occupies a sun-filled corner. Doors fold away to access the inground swimming pool deck.

A rounded, bumped-out room lined with windows functions as a breakfast area and also opens to the outdoors.

The gleaming white kitchen is equipped with stainless-steel appliances and a center island with a sink. The main rooms, as well as the walk-in pantry, have heated ceramic tile floors.

The windowed turret contains a spiraling staircase that leads to the upper-level bedrooms. The primary suite features a sitting area with a limestone hearth fireplace—one of four in the house—and dual walk-in closets. Balconies overlook the double kidney-shaped, resort-style pool.

There are a total of four bedrooms and three bathrooms as well as a wood-floored family room, carpeted home theater and finished basement with a wine cellar.

Profusion Immobilier listing agent Eric Taranowski, envisions the chateau being bought for use as a primary residence. “Truly a top-tier home quality-wise,” he says, “it’s fully loaded.”

The multitiered cinema room is soundproof, the tilt-and-turn windows and solid interior doors were imported from Italy and the top-of-the-line upper-level bathrooms have smart toilets with heated seats that are motion-activated.

“It’s designed for discerning purchasers,” he says. The asking price of the property is CA $2.98 million or about US $2.23 million.
