Syrian crisis live: Russia says Assad has left the country

Donald Trump said on Sunday that President Bashar al-Assad had left Syria, using the unfolding events in the Middle East to reiterate his calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place,” the US president-elect wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In the same post Trump said that Russia was “weakened” by the war in Ukraine and called for an “immediate” ceasefire and negotiations.

Earlier during the weekend, Trump said the US should avoid getting involved in the events unfolding in Syria.
