Japan and South Korea in spotlight ahead of rates meeting and Yoon’s US visit

Several countries, including the UK, US and Italy, have begun evacuations from Sudan, after a week of fighting between the country’s armed forces and a paramilitary group.

British prime minister Rishi Sunak said “UK armed forces have completed a complex and rapid evacuation of British diplomats and their families”. The White House said it had removed US government personnel from the capital, Khartoum.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni said all Italians who had asked to leave, as well as some other foreign nationals, had left. Canada, France, Germany, Ghana, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also evacuated their citizens, their governments said.
