Live news: Oil set to break two-session advance ahead of Fed decision

Taiwan’s military is prepared for any Chinese military threats during President Tsai Ing-wen’s upcoming overseas travel, vice defence minister Po Horng-huei said Wednesday.

Tsai is due to start a 10-day trip on March 29 to diplomatic allies Guatemala and Belize, as well as to the US.

Washington on Tuesday called on China not to use the US visit — standard for Taiwanese presidents for many years — as a pretext for aggressive moves around Taiwan. But since Tsai suspended foreign travel during the pandemic, China has stepped up military pressure on the country.

The defence ministry “has contingency plans for any [Chinese] move during the president’s trip,” Po said, adding that the ministry would look at everything including a “worst case”.
