Pennsylvania judge declines to halt Elon Musk’s $1mn voter giveaway

A Pennsylvania judge has declined to immediately halt Elon Musk’s $1mn giveaway to voters who sign a pro-Trump petition in the state.

Philadelphia district attorney Lawrence Krasner had sued to stop the practice, claiming it amounted to an “illegal lottery scheme”. Lawyers for Musk countered at a hearing on Monday that awardees were carefully selected on merit.

Musk’s America Pac has awarded more than a dozen of the prizes in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona.

The Department of Justice had previously warned that the prizes may flout US law, which bars paying individuals to register to vote.
