Sinéad O’Connor, one of Ireland’s best known singers, has died, her family announced.

O’Connor, who shot to fame with the hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990, was 56. The cause of her death was not immediately known.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” her family said in a statement.

Tributes poured in from politicians, artists and fans, praising O’Connor’s fearlessness, feistiness and sense of fun but also her fragility. The singer, who converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat, is survived by three children. Her 17-year-old son Shane died in 2022.
